Abstract

With the proliferation of microgrids (MGs), power distribution grids are transforming into multi-microgrids (MMGs). In these systems, the focus is not only on the economic operation of the individual MGs but also on the power flows between the MGs and the superordinate grid. Therefore, for cost-efficient implementation of MMGs, not only the economic operation but also a cost-efficient design of the MMG must be ensured. Therefore, this paper proposes an approach to determine a cost-efficient MMG expansion that considers both investment and operating costs. Based on a model-based analysis it can be demonstrated that the overall system economics benefits when both components are considered in the scheduling of MGs. Through a series of simulations, it is also shown that the design can vary significantly due to different compositions of the MMG and variations in wholesale prices.
