Abstract

The objective of this paper is the implementation of a novel closed-loop adaptive power control approach for VSC-HVDC and its integration into a Power System Control Center Demonstrator (PSCCD). Curative Set-point Adaptation (CSA) based on a curative security constrained optimal power (CSCOPF) for selective equipment unloading is described. This is based on a mathematical optimization. By means of suitable objective functions and constraints, operational security can be restored after a contingency. The voltage angle control (VAC) approach is introduced and extended by a CSA. Immediate automatic unloading of equipment within the influence radius, up to curative operating point adjustment using CSCOPF is enabled. This provides a stabilizing control concept in fault scenarios. The control approach is integrated in the PSCCD. The PSCCD and its components are described. The corresponding power system model is simulated in PSS®SINCAL/NETOMAC and operated in real time as a digital twin of the power system. The power system is connected to the control room via the corresponding measuring equipment, secondary technology and associated protocols. This allows measurement signals to be transmitted and commands to be sent to the actuators. The HVDC model is also connected to a process control system. In this way, the proposed control concept can be activated from the control room and the corresponding set-points can be transmitted. The interaction of the control concept and the secondary technology is validated by means of a contingency. The reaction of the HVDC system to a short circuit leading to a line trip is evaluated. The control approaches are able to restore operational security. The investigations show that more complex control concept can be successfully integrated into the PSCCD and that the HVDC thus increases operational security.
