Abstract

Since lithium (Li+) plays roles in angiogenesis and osteogenesis, the localized and controlled release of Li+ ions from bioactive glasses (BGs) represents a promising alternative therapy for bone regeneration. This chapter will review recent advances in the development of Li-containing BGs and their in vitro and in vivo angiogenic and osteogenic potential. Current issues and future directions for the use of these BGs for regenerative medicine of bone tissue are discussed.
