Abstract

In the long term, it is a global goal to achieve a fully regenerative energy supply without
fossil resources. Due to specific local differences with regard to the potential of renewable
energies, a global energy economy is unavoidable in this context. From the perspective
of energy efficiency, the direct use of electrical energy and thus the electrification
of sectors and processes is the most economical way. Against the backdrop of
a global energy scenario, however, this perspective must be part of a much more comprehensive
economic analysis that also takes into account the aspect of energy distribution.
Here, material solutions have a high potential. For short-distance energy
transport, the use of existing power grids continues to be the solution. Over medium
distances, however, hydrogen in pipeline networks is already gaining greater importance
(European Hydrogen Backbone). For long-distance transport, liquid hydrogen
derivatives such as methanol can be used in the existing fuel infrastructure.

A dedicated analysis including the power-to-power efficiencies of the different energy
carriers (electricity, hydrogen, derivatives), their economic efficiency and availability
resulting from the energy distribution, as well as the application-specific potentials and
characteristics is needed to develop a strategy regarding which energy carriers can be
used most sensibly in which sectors. Due to the local limitation of renewable energies
and the range of potential applications of gaseous hydrogen in the sectors of industry,
buildings and power generation, there seems to be a high potential of liquid derivatives
in the transport sector. If such derivatives prove to be an economic solution anyway
due to the energy distribution, a scenario arises in which the direct use of electrical
energy as well as the use of gaseous hydrogen outside the transport sector seem to
make more sense. In addition, there are advantages of liquid derivatives such as methanol
with regard to drop-in potential, energy density and storage in mobile applications.
