Abstract

The paper presents a smart grid study on protection security issues. The study is based on integrated analysis of network and protection system. Especially in smart or future networks with varying and hardly predictable conditions, protection targets as dependability, security and speed are increasingly violated. Protection mal-operation leading to unwanted supply interruptions are the consequences. Automated assessment of smart grids, including relay installation points, protection types and all operational states of network is essential. The assessment strategy is focused on dependability, security and speed of protection systems and its impact on economic aspects. Serious bottlenecks in the protection system behavior are detected and indication for improvement is derived. The prospective knowledge of protection failures and suggestions for remedies gives the opportunity to reduce the risk of unnecessary disturbances or blackouts.
