Abstract

In the business-to-consumer (B2C) market, in the last few years digital platform business mod-
els have been able to successfully establish themselves and become part of our everyday lives
(e.g., Uber, Amazon). In the context of the digitalization of products, production systems and
processes, the importance of digital platforms is also increasing in the industrial business-to-
business (B2B) market. Network effects, which arise when the number of users has an influence
on the value of other actors, are named as a decisive mechanism for the success of platform
business models. Previous studies focused on successful platform examples from the B2C mar-
ket. A detailed investigation and differentiation of the effects occurring in the manufacturing
industry is currently missing. In order to better illustrate the effects for industrial applications,
nine practical examples were prepared in this paper using a value-oriented methodology. Based
on this, they are analyzed for the influence of an increasing number of participants of the roles
involved. Thereby, six different network effect types could be identified, which differ in their
characteristics between certain roles and can be traced back to different value propositions. This
typification should lead to a more detailed understanding of network effects in industrial value
networks and thus support companies in using these effects in a focused approach building their
platform business model.
