Abstract

A current option for anti-cancer immunotherapy is to make use of epitopes which can guide cytotoxic T cells to destroy the tumor. It is however difficult to find immunogenic epitopes which engage the T cells sufficiently to fight cancer effectively. Additionally, cancer heterogeneity makes the development of such epitopes even more difficult since there is little general overlap between two cancers. Hence an epitope-based approach requires the use of many modern aspects of biological science like bioinformatics, next-generation sequencing and biostatistics. In this article, we provide a broad introduction to the topic from a computational perspective and offer insights into current paradigms of data-driven epitope selection, explain some fundamental workflows and outline avenues for future research in vitro and in silico.
