Aegean metal work of the Late Bronze Age (LBA) and Early Iron Age (EIA) period played a distinctive role within archaeological research and study objectives since Heinrich Schliemann's excavations at Mycenae, and the contemporaneous German excavations at Olympia. Vessels of different types derive from tombs during the LBA and from tombs and sanctuaries during the EIA. As scientific analyses are generally rare, the term "bronze" is used to describe vessels made of both copper and bronze. By comparing the different types of bronze vessels that became prevalent in the Aegean during the LBA and EIA, it is obvious that certain shapes are characteristic for distinct chronological periods. In general, one may identify different stages of development in the manufacture of LBA and EIA Aegean bronze vessels that have been exposed to autochthonous traditions as well as to contact‐induced external influences over time.
