Abstract

Inside rolling bearings, there is a large number of different contacts. These include not only linear contacts on the raceways, the cage and the rolling elements, but also point and elliptical contacts between the rolling element end face and the ring rib. Depending on the load situation, these contacts contribute differently to the load carrying capacity, the temperature development and thus the operating capability of the rolling bearing. The axial load carrying capacity of roller bearings is determined primarily by the rib contact, since the axial load components are absorbed by the ribs. To calculate the load capacity, an exact description of the contact between the rolling element end face and the ring rib is necessary. An improved contact calculation allows the targeted development of more efficient and higher-performance rolling bearings.

In existing methods for dimensioning rolling bearings, the contact between the rolling element and rib is calculated on the basis of the time- and resource-efficient theory of Hertz, which makes simplifications in the description of the geometries. However, contacts of real, complex geometry pairings of rolling element and rib, as used to optimize the axial load capacity of roller bearings, can only be calculated inaccurately with this method. Compared with time-consuming, high-quality numerical calculations (e.g. finite element analysis), there are greater discrepancies in the size of the contact area and contact pressures.

For this reason, this paper presents a new time- and resource-efficient method for the calculation of point and elliptical contacts. Using the method of dimensional reduction (MDR) according to Popov, contacts of rotationally symmetric bodies can be calculated exactly. A modification of MDR allows the calculation of non-rotationally symmetric bodies. The existing contact situation is described and calculated with a superposition of different rotationally symmetric geometries. The modified MDR is compared with the Hertz theory using simple contact situations. The results for more complex contact situations are compared with those from finite element analyses. By comparing the calculated contact area and contact pressure, the possibilities and limitations of the modified MDR are assessed.
