Depopulation and ageing are considered as predominant representations of rural areas in Germany. Another trend, however, often remains hidden, i. e. that rural areas are also characterised by immigration. What is striking here is that the share of the foreign population in the countryside in particular has increased strongly since 2014. Alongside the immigration of forced migrants seeking asylum, various forms of labour migration, lifestyle migration and the return migration of people can be detected. The article presents the different processes in a regionally differentiated manner, and outlines implications in various spheres.
