Here we present an efficiency analysis of axial and core-shell nanowire array solar cells. A microscopic three-dimensional (3D) electro-optical simulation is applied to both device types, and it is found that the core-shell nanowire provides higher photocurrent and lower open circuit voltage than the axial nanowire. Based on the microscopic 3D calculation of the carrier collection mechanism inside the devices, we derive a Shockley equation modified by the active region concept. This simplified model is then applied to systematically study the relationship between efficiency and nanowire geometry. Copyright © 2012 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.
