Abstract

Emerging applications such as cooperative automated driving in connection with technical advancements made in recent years require a new generation of V2X technologies. The upcoming IEEE 802.11bd standard, the successor of IEEE 802.11p, addresses increased throughput, range and reliability requirements by leveraging features such as high density midambles, dual carrier modulation and range extension. Within this work the authors present the first system-level evaluation of the upcoming standard. Therefore, a simulation framework to evaluate the transmission reliability in terms of packet reception ratio in highway scenarios with variable vehicle density is presented, based on which both technologies are compared. The results show significant improvements of the maximum transmission range, slight improvements in robustness against access layer packet loss and a strong performance degradation when using dual carrier modulation.
