Abstract

Presented is a new windup prevention scheme for minimum-phase SISO systems with saturating sensor, subject to step-like disturbances. It follows the standard design paradigm of anti-windup control, namely, “Design a nominal compensator and if saturation causes undesired effects, add measures to prevent them.” In input-constrained systems, one first stabilizes the compensator during saturation. In output-constrained systems, this would not guarantee linear performance recovery. Therefore, the integral part must remain active during saturation. Next, the stability of the nonlinear loop must be ensured. Normally this is done with a dynamic feedback of the difference between the saturated and the unsaturated signals. This difference, however, is not available in systems with sensor saturation. Instead, a saturation indicator is used to reshape the linear part of the loop during saturation. The saturation indicator is a switch located after the saturation nonlinearity. Therefore, a strict proof of stability for this scheme is unknown to date. All investigations, however, even with extreme examples, have shown that this solution stabilizes the nonlinear loop. Additionally, it turns out that an equivalent (but not realizable) dynamic feedback of the difference between restricted and unrestricted output signals has the same stability behavior as the realizable scheme with saturation indicator.
