Abstract

Good disturbance attenuation requires fast dynamics and this in turn leads to an exacerbation of the noxious effects of sensor saturation. Using, however, the compensating approach, a stable nonlinear loop and a desired disturbance attenuation can be achieved simultaneously. In the compensating approach, the dynamics of the system are compensated by the controller. If the remaining eigenvalues are shifted left, a nearly arbitrary amount of disturbance attenuation can be obtained while the linear part of the loop satisfies the circle criterion. Thus, a windup prevention method for output-constrained systems with a strict proof of stability becomes feasible. This solution can also be applied to square MIMO systems and it is nearly as simple as for SISO systems. A drawback compared to the method of Chap. 1 is the fact that the poles of the system are part of the characteristic polynomial of the linear closed loop, so that slow or badly damped eigenvalues can degrade the shape of the disturbance transients but not its maximum amplitude. Another important feature of the compensating approach is its parametrization by only one parameter, which is of importance for the investigations in Chaps. 4 and 5.
