Abstract

Nickel-base superalloys are used for many engine parts due to their excellent high temperature properties. For small to medium sized parts with high geometrical complexity, metal injection moulding (MIM) offers interesting opportunities and advantages compared to well-established manufacturing technologies. One of the most important application criteria for some high temperature applications is the excellent creep resistance of nickel-base superalloys. The creep resistance of metal injection moulded nickel-base superalloys however, is typically poorer compared to cast alloys due to the much finer microstructure, i.e. smaller grain sizes. In the present study, the influence of the carbon content on the microstructure and in particular on the grain size and the resulting creep properties of a metal injection moulded nickel-base superalloy derived from CM 247 LC is investigated. A reduction of the powder carbon content and thus the carbon content in the as-sintered part leads to significant stronger grain growth and thus increased creep resistance.
