Abstract

Typically, application notes and published papers for single-ended forward converters with reset winding only consider the saturation flux density of core materials for the design of the transformer. Disregarding the remanence flux density during the design phase, however, might lead to core saturation during converter operation. First, this paper derives the excitation of the forward transformer core. Measurement results then illustrate the influence of the remanence flux density and the inherent risk of core saturation. Hysteretic material properties should be considered when designing the inductive components of switched-mode power supplies. Therefore, this example is particularly relevant for hardware developers.
