Abstract

Sensors to measure the parameters of gases are used in a wide range of industrial processes. However, traditional gas sensor types often cannot be applied under harsh environmental conditions. Suitable existing noninvasive alternatives such as time-of-flight permittivity measurements in the millimeter-wave range suffer from high cost and are difficult to miniaturize. Therefore, we propose a low-cost solution based on a fully-integrated transceiver to determine gas concentration in binary gas mixtures. First, the fundamental principle is demonstrated with commercial measurement equipment. A sensor prototype utilizing a low-cost frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar is built and its performance verified in multiple experiments achieving promising results.
