Abstract

Squib Driver Unit deploys the airbag for passenger safety by igniting the squibs. The High Side (HS) driver provides regulated current for defined dwell times in order to ignite the squib with energy of 8mJ. This energy should be delivered only when the driver is powered. However dynamic shorts with slew rates of 100V/μs on the drain of the HS driver in its unpowered state can also provide 8mJ energy to the squib and inadvertently deploy the airbag if proper gate discharge is not present to ensure fast turn OFF of the HS driver. The HS driver proposed here regulates the current to 1.37A for 2.1ms and 2A for 0.75ms in the powered state with 0.4μJ energy limitation to prevent inadvertent deployment using passive and active discharge paths in the unpowered state. The leakage current from the drain of HS driver is 1μA at 35V when compared to prior Art of 50μA. This design is implemented and verified on a 4 loop squib driver in 0.35μm, 85V BiCMOS process.
