Abstract

We propose a new concept for passive RFID tags and an associated reading and decoding strategy. The information is encoded in the orientation of small wires inside the tag. A circular polarization millimeter-wave imaging system is used as an inter-rogation unit. Decoding is achieved by reconstructing a radar im-age of the tag and using the Hough transform to determine the wires’ orientations. We demonstrate the first-ever use of multi-layer image-based RFID tags. According to our results, up to four layers can be used. An information content of 251 bit (7 bit/cm2) was obtainable, which is unprecedented in image-based RFID.
