Abstract
Enterprise information systems are the backbone of modern business activities. Due to the extensive use of information and communication technology as well as the increasing digitization of business processes, vast amounts of data are generated that promise a wide range of potentials for generating new insights. However, there is a lack of specialists, who have the necessary skills to conquer this situation and unveil hidden potentials from those vast amounts of data. As a result, the profession of the so-called “data scientist” has evolved as one of the most wanted job profiles of the 21st century. At the same time, numerous qualification programs have been developed in order to address the necessary skill requirements. Against this background, this paper deals with the comparison of data science competence requirements and the coverage of current qualification programs in order to outline the status quo and identify differences between demand side and supply side. For the identification of data science skill requirements from a demand perspective, existing competence profiles are systematized and consolidated into a generic scheme. The resulting categories are then used to carry out an in-depth content analysis of qualification programs currently available on the market from a supply perspective. Based on the results of both surveys, recommendations are derived for business practice and related research.
