Abstract

Digital data is becoming an increasingly important part for the development of innovative business models. Nevertheless, there is great uncertainty among companies about how data affects the business model. To answer this question this paper examines the role of data and identifies essential data relations inside business models. A system dynamic perspective is chosen to facilitate a sufficient understanding of the data relations that drive the business model behaviour. An exploratory multiple case study was used to examine 33 innovative business model cases that have been generated through a hackathon. The qualitative data collection took place based on several data sources: artefacts of the hackathon, team observations as well as semi-structured interviews. The study shows that business enabling data relations are dynamic nature and evolve over time as the business model itself unfolds in its implementation. Depending on data contexts, dependencies and relations, data can have positive business fostering effects or a destructive effect on the entire business model. In other words, data can be a curse or blessing for a business model.
