Abstract

Digital human models enable a pro-active and virtual assessment of ergonomics in design. Despite this huge potential, possibilities of user-product interaction modelling, in terms of postures or movement generation, are limited and poorly integrated in common virtual design tools. To address this deficiency, we propose the concept of “elementary affordances”. These universally describe parts of human interaction behavior and shall serve as a modelling interface for posture and movement prediction algorithms. This paper presents an empirical study, identifying 18 elementary affordances, proving that parts of human interaction behavior can be described via a relatively small set of elementary affordances.
