Abstract

For many hazardous substances an ambient air monitoring is not sufficient for a valid health risk assessment. Human biological monitoring can assess the individual exposure or the burden caused by exposure and the individual risk more precisely. Biomonitoring is a part of preventive occupational health care; however, the results cannot be directly implemented for surveillance and regulation as medical science is being applied and biomonitoring is therefore part of medical professional regulations and doctors must observe medical confidentiality. The Occupational Safety Act, the Preventive Occupational Medical Care Ordinance and the Medical Rules for Occupational Medical Care 11.1 regulate the application of human biological monitoring for the occupational risk assessment and protection.
