Abstract

Angiogenesis is controlled by several regulators and is essential for the success of any healing or regenerative process in the human body. By using bioactive glasses (BGs) of varying compositions, angiogenesis and its regulators can be effective stimulated. The angiogenic effect of BGs is mainly the result of the release of biologically active ions during their immersion in the human body. By fine-tuning the compositions of BGs, the release kinetics of ions can be controlled and specific cellular responses and tissue reactions can be achieved. This article discusses BGs of different compositions in their applications in vascularization strategies for tissue engineering.
