Everything ages – including components made of short-fibre-reinforced plastic, which are frequently used in modern vehicle design. A thousand times repeated mechanical stress from service load cases leads to a degradation of the mechanical properties, which influences the crash behaviour of the structure. However, this effect is currently not taken into account in the assessment of crash safety due to the use of material data obtained from material samples in new condition. The present article therefore presents a method that allows the effects of this material degradation to be taken into account in numerical crash simulation – and thus an assessment of crash safety in various phases of life.
