Abstract

Mixture formation is undoubtedly a step of tremendous significance within the Diesel engine process chain. Despite decades of application of direct injection Diesel engines, not all related details and fundamentals are fully understood and well described. Furthermore, quantitative measurements of the mixture composition in a spray at engine-like ambient conditions can rarely be found. In the presented work, 1‑dimensional Raman spectroscopy is utilized at an optically accessible injection chamber in order to provide information about local fuel-air-ratios. Supplemented by a calibration method, which has been developed with regard to the utilized setup and test bench environment, direct quantitative results are obtained. By means of a mathematical method and substantiated with physical considerations regarding the mixture formation process, the mixture compositions in a 2D centre plain of sprays at various ambient conditions are derived and analysed.
