Abstract

Objective: One of the effects of digitisation has been the extended and permanent accessibility of employees during their leisure time, which can lead to mental stress. The results should help to identify starting points for WHM on how to deal with the permanent accessibility in terms of making contact in relation to official matters outside regular working hours. Method: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted among employees in Bavarian SMEs by means of questionnaires in order to investigate the expected availability and amount of contact during leisure time by different groups of people. In addition, information was collected on the different tasks that the contact entailed and on the medium or the communication channel as well as the respective frequency with which contact was made. The evaluation of the results was descriptive. Results: Accessibility and expected availability during free time both vary across the different groups of people. Most of the statements on contact during leisure time and the highest incidences were reported in connection with the nature of the task. Overall, the analysis of the frequency with which contact is made shows that stress tends to increase at higher frequencies across all characteristics. Conclusions: Companies are advised to take behavioural and organisational measures to deal with permanent accessibility. Certain factors make a difference for respondents - by whom they expect to be contacted or are contacted during their free time and what the upcoming task will entail - and this should be taken into account. Further research is needed in order to derive suitable operational measures for dealing with permanent accessibility.
