The Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) process enables manufacturing lightweight sheet metals with outstanding mechanical properties. However, the significant increase In strength Is accompanied by a loss in ductility. The low formability obviously limits the Implementation of these sheet products for automotive applications but It may be enhanced by a local short term heat treatment according to the Tailored Heat Treated Blanks technology. The finite-element based design of the latter method needs accurate information about the plastic behaviour of these advanced materials. In this paper, the flow characteristics of the as-received and by accumulative roll bonding manufactured AA6016 sheets are investigated. Different stress - strain paths are considered testing both products using the tensile test and the layer compression test at room temperature with and without a previous heat treatment. The short term heat treatment Is realized to simulate the conditions occurring in the Tailored Heat Treated Blanks process. The experimental results are presented in form of true stress - strain curves and yield loci determined from different criteria and represented In a principal stress state. © 2011 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
