Abstract

Microforming processes are characterized by a significant influence of the microstructure on the deformation behaviour. While effects which are influencing the integral deformation behaviour like the influence of the free surface on the material properties are meanwhile identified and welldescribed, the local deformation behaviour of grains which has a significant impact on the final shape evolution is still not understood. In dependency of the grain size as well as the grain orientation, local deformation behaviour is yielding to differences in die filling and in shape evolution. Within this paper, a methodology is discussed to determine and analyze the local deformation behaviour by in-situ optical measurements of stress-strain state within the deformation area. Based on first investigations, a cold forging tool system has been developed in order to measure the local deformation within the specimen using can-backward extrusion process. The process layout is reduced to the deformation of a half cylinder where the die is closed by a sapphire window. Through this translucent tool the deformation process can be observed in-situ by a CCD-camera with a resolution of about two microns. The local deformation information of the captured images can be used for the calculation of the strain distribution. Based on this improved understanding of local deformation behaviour, previously described simulation models can be enhanced and finally verified.
