Abstract

In microforming applications the contact state between the tool and a lubricated workpiece differs significantly from that of a forming process in conventional length scale. The drastic reduction of the lateral dimensions of the workpiece surfaces in microforming, while there is no change in surface roughness, causes a significant reduction of the number of asperities contacting the tool. Therefore, the influence of single asperities on the tribological behaviour of the surface increases. Thus, the assumption that a complete flattening of the regions on top of the asperities contacting the tool takes place during forming can not be maintained. Instead, the socalled nanotopography on top of the flattened asperities has to be investigated. The relationship between these contact regions, the lubricant and the impact on the tribological behaviour has not been analysed yet. In this paper the flattening behaviour of single idealised asperities is analysed. A test rig for surface flattening is introduced, which enables the in-situ observation of the developing contact area with a translucent tool, a telecentric objective and a CCDcamera. Upsetting tests are performed with and without lubricant. The nanotopography and its behaviour during flattening is characterised by confocal microscopy and scanning probe microscopy.
