Abstract

Laser micro bending and its controlled variant, laser micro adjustment are known for many years. Different theories on the working principle depending on interaction time and energy flux density have been evolved and experimentally proven [1]. The temperature gradient mechanism is one of the most established. As interaction times get shorter with the development of new laser sources, new phenomena are detected and different interaction principles postulated. In this paper the use of the temperature compression mechanism for adjusting fiber optics will be shown. An actuator for micro positioning of glass fibers relative to collimating optics is designed using simulations and experimental results. The benefit of laser adjustable actuators in building an automated, modular production line will then be demonstrated on a system developed for the assembly of fiber optical components. As heat impact and thermally induced damage are becoming a serious issue for laser adjustment in micro-technology, new, non-thermal bending mechanisms using ultrashort laser pulses are experimentally demonstrated and their interaction principles derived. Thus the article will give latest scientific information on our newest theories concerning the functional principles in laser bending but also focus on examples for the beginning migration of the process into industrial use for already well known process variants.
