Abstract

The role of optics in micro systems is continuously growing. Future systems will use electrical and optical data paths in parallel for a higher performance. Two dimensional silicon-based systems for optical data processing like power splitters or optical switches are already widespread. To expand the architecture of micro-optical systems into the third dimension a suitable joining technology is needed. Conventional laser welding can be used for this task but often causes cracks due to the high temperature gradients. In this contribution a solution for this problem is presented with laser pre- and post heating. Thus high input / output counts in a small volume can be achieved that generate or manipulate optical data. For a long distance transmission, optical fibers have to be coupled to the micro optical components. Therefore the fibers are often fixed in V-grooves by gluing. To replace this temperature sensitive technology by significantly more reliable alternatives, we will present two laser based methods: laser beam soldering and laser beam welding (clamping). For short interconnects between or within functional units, integrated signal transmission with polymer planar waveguides can simplify the system. Therefore we will finally report on some new results based on laser direct writing. This technology allows the realisation of arbitrary formed waveguides in optical polymers based on UV induced refractive index changes.
