Abstract

DC-grid installations with a quasi-standard DC voltage of 380 V have been common for some time now in application areas like data centers or telecommunication facilities. In recent years, other fields, for example commercial or industrial buildings, saw an increase in DC power distribution as well. They can provide advantages like increased power efficiency or better integration of renewable energy sources (e.g. photovoltaic plants). A simple example for such a grid is shown in Figure 1. This approach also offers a less complicated realization of uninterruptible power supply functions through battery storage systems without inverters or recuperation of energy from electric drives. Besides the savings from reduced energy losses, the smaller number of components offers the chance to provide DC devices at lower costs. However, safety guidelines and standards for DC-grid installations in those areas are in some cases still in the making or are not present at all. This also applies to protection devices for such grids which are often not available on the market or cannot fulfill the differing requirements (e.g. DC current breaking capability). This paper aims to provide practical guidelines and values for certain aspects for the design of safe DC-grids and protection elements, which can be seen as a mandatory requirement to widen the acceptance for DC technology in application areas other than data centers or telecom Equipment.
