Abstract

The article discusses the relationship between artists and discos as well as between art history and club culture, providing examples and short case studies from different periods. The first part gives an overview over famous artists (Warhol, Haring etc.) who visited equally famous New York clubs or delivered works for their interior. In the second part the spatial character of a club is analyzed. The third and last part describes different cases (Techno club of the Nineties and contemporary large-capacity clubs) in which clubs refer to historic schemes such as ecclesiastical architecture or baroque decorations. The article questions the reasons of artistic and art historic references in clubs in the different periods of club culture.
