Abstract

The authors present results of a systematic study of the sorption- and phase behavior of Ar, Kr and nitrogen at 77 K and 87 K on different pristine mesoporous MCM-48 SiO2 phases of mean pore diams. 2-3 nm and on a MCM-48 SiO2/Fe(III) oxide host-guest compd. Ar and Kr sorption isotherms on all MCM-48 SiO2 materials revealed phase transitions accompanied by sorption hysteresis H1 well below the bulk triple point temp. Details of the sorption hysteresis depend on temp. and pore size, e.g. with increasing temp. and decreasing pore size a shrinkage of the hysteresis loops is obsd. MCM-48 SiO2 consists of 2 interwoven, but unconnected 3 dimensional pore systems. Because of this special structure the cubic MCM-48 SiO2 phase is considered as a matrix to immobilize catalytic active species onto or within the SiO2 walls. The anal. of nitrogen and Ar sorption isotherms at 77 K and 87 K indicates that the impregnation of a pristine MCM-48 SiO2 phase with Fe(III) oxide led indeed to a coating of the inner surface of the SiO2 walls.
