Abstract

The effect of confined geometry on the crit. adsorption of a fluid was studied by measuring the physisorption of SF6 in a mesoporous controlled-pore glass (CPG, mean pore width 31 nm) along an isochoric path at the crit. d. ρc in the one-phase region above the crit. temp. of the fluid (15 K ≥ (T - Tc) ≥ 0.3 K). While the surface excess amt. of a fluid against a single planar adsorbing surface is expected to increase in a monotonic way along ρ = ρc for T → Tc, it is found for the present system that the excess amt. of fluid in the pore reaches a max. at T - Tc ≈ 1.5 K and then decreases sharply on further approaching Tc along the crit. isochore. Close to the crit. point (T - Tc < 0.3 K) the mean d. of the pore fluid even tends to values lower than the d. of the bulk fluid. A grand canonical ensemble (GCE) Monte Carlo simulation of a fluid between 2 parallel walls (wall-to-wall distance 20 mol. diams.) in equil. with a bulk reservoir at the crit. d. suggests that this effect can be attributed to a depletion in the core region of the pore as T approaches Tc.
