The mol.-accessible porosity is important for many applications of porous materials including metal-org. frameworks (MOFs ). The adsorption measurement is an established technique for porosity detn. and is also a long-standing method for characterization of a wide range of porous materials.MOFs due to their crystallinity, incredibly versatile structural chem., and pore size distributions ranging from ultramicropores up to mesopores exhibit, however, specific characteristics and physisorption phenomena rarely obsd. for other materials. The most unique feature ofMOFs , rendering them as outstanding adsorbents, is their softness (or flexible properties) giving rise to rich diversity in exptl. obsd. adsorption isotherms. These include phenomena of wide hystereses, isotherms with multiple steps, or increased isosteric enthalpy of adsorption with increased gas uptake. Moreover, advanced sample pretreatment and data interpretation are essential when dealing withMOFs of (ultra)high porosity (i.e.,BET surface area > 5000 m2 g-1 ). Furthermore, the well-defined crystal structure ofMOFs enables insights into porosity and adsorption by a combination of expts. with mol. simulation.In this chapter, the most relevant aspects of adsorption methodol. regarding MOFs are discussed both from practical and fundamental points of view.
