Abstract

A review. First, the exptl. requirements and procedures are described which are necessary to obtain accurate adsorption data with a high resoln. The sample conditioning is addressed as well as the choice of the adsorptive. Next, the adsorption mechanisms are discussed which is necessary to correctly interpret the gas adsorption isotherms for the surface and pore size anal. The differences in the filling of micro- and mesopores are outlined, and the origin of the hysteresis loops in the adsorption curves is illustrated taking into account pore blocking and cavitation phenomena. The state-of-the-art for pore size and surface area anal. is given for micro/mesoporous mol. sieves. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method for the surface area detn. is critically discussed and compared with the non-local-d.-functional-theory (NLDFT) method. Concerning the porosity anal., the Horvath-Kawazoe, Saito-Foley, and Cheng-Yang methods are mentioned as well as the NLDFT method and the GCMC and GCMD simulations. [on SciFinder(R)]
