Abstract

The Do and Do model for water adsorption isotherms of activated carbons was refined, linking its parameters to the amt. of surface oxygenated and nitrogenated complexes on the carbon. As these values can be detd. independently, e.g. by XPS, it is possible to predict the water isotherm of an activated carbon or, vice versa, use the water vapor isotherm to characterize its surface functionality. During testing activated carbons that were heat treated to render them more hydrophobic can be reoxidized by ambient air and become more hydrophilic. [on SciFinder(R)]
