Abstract

This paper focuses on automatic document classification. Documents are assigned
to different levels based on the degree of illumination of a document. A method ori-
ginally proposed for writer identification is adapted for and evaluated in a dataset
containing illuminated charters. First results show that the classification of charters
in “pure text” versus “contains some form of decoration/illumination” is successful
in 83.7% of the cases, which might be enough for a rough pre-selection of illuminated
charters. A more refined classification into three subcategories of illuminated charters
gives an average accuracy of 76.5%. A detailed inspection reveals that one category
in particular, referring to “unusually rich decoration”, is difficult for an automatic
system to classify.
