Abstract

Tolerance-cost-optimizations help to find optimal tolerances for a given tolerance design, which achieve minimum total costs while satisfying the quality requirements. These requirements are commonly expressed as scrap rates in ppm-range.

This paper presents several methods for the scrap rate estimation in sampling-based tolerance-cost-optimizations. Moreover, the proposed approaches are applied to a typical case study and compared in terms of their required computation time and the obtained optimization results. The novelty of the contribution can be found in comparing different scrap rate estimation techniques for sampling-based tolerance-cost-optimizations and giving recommendations to researchers as well as practitioners.
