Abstract

Rolling bearings which are used under extreme conditions or restrictions may not be conventionally lubricated. Important lubricant requirements, such as friction reduction and wear
protection, can no longer be ensured and premature failure of the bearing occurs. Within the scope of this research, coated components are used to undertake these two important
tasks. The investigated coating systems are applied as PVD coatings (physical vapour deposition) on the rolling elements. The counter body in the rolling contact is either made of
ceramic (silicon nitride - Si3N4), steel (100Cr6) or coated as well. The coated rolling bearings are deep grooved ball bearings, which are operated under realistic conditions on a
friction test rig and are tested for lifetime. Afterwards, the friction and wear behaviour is analysed with the aid of the measured friction torque trends and various microscopic analyses.
Promising results showed, in particular, a modified hydrogenated amorphous carbon coating system with a metallic doping element (a-C:H:Me) functional layer. Depending on the
material combination of rings and balls and on which bearing element the coating was applied, a predefined minimum requirement for lifetime, low friction or very damage tolerant
behaviour could be achieved.
