In recent years, a debate has taken place in the urban society of Nuremberg as to whether gentrification is
taking place in the district of Gostenhof, i.e. a process of redevelopment which leads to the displacement
of established tenants and to impoverishment of socio-cultural activities. To this end, the Institute of Geography
at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has carried out a research workshop for Master students.
The present article documents selected results of the workshop, including contributions from the podium at
a discussion on the subject, as well as the results of interviews conducted by the students and statements
collected by them. In this way, the paper provides an (in the sense of qualitative research: representative)
insight into the debates and positions regarding the question of a possible gentrification of Gostenhof,
without claiming to make conclusive statements as to the type, scope and normative value of sociocultural
processes in Gostenhof.
