Abstract


The genesis of limestone-marl alternations such as those present in Upper Jurassic successions of SW Germany has a long history of controversial discussion. The origin of the rhythmic alternation of limestone beds and marl interlayers, the so-called couplets, has been addressed in numerous studies, and similarly the large-scale trends of limestone-dominated and marl-dominated intervals of the Upper Jurassic (Impressamergel, Wohlgebankte Kalke, and Lacunosamergel Formations) have been thoroughly studied. The intermediate scale, in contrast, the so-called bundles, has received markedly less attention. Here we focus on this intermediate scale.



A general problem with deciphering of paleoenvironmental information recorded in calcareous successions is the usually pronounced diagenetic overprint that particularly affects mineralogically metastable primary constituents. Primary aragonite, for example, typically is transformed into diagenetically stable calcite. The mineralogical composition of the precursor sediment and the primary aragonite content in particular, however, reflect the environmental conditions under which the sediment was formed.



Reconstructing the primary mineralogy therefore would yield valuable information on the palaeo-environment. For this task we employ a new model that allows for assessing the mineralogical composition of the precursor sediment, and apply this model to the example of SW Germany (Neuffen quarry). With this approach, variations of influx of shallow-water carbonate platform sediment into the depositional basin become visible, and are interpreted as fluctuations in biogenic carbonate productivitiy. Thus, new insight is gained into the fluctuating environmental conditions in the Jurassic Sea of SW Germany during the time of deposition of the Impressamergel, Wohlgebankte Kalke, and Lacunosamergel Formations.
