Abstract

The Article seeks to explain the recent ‘environmental enthusiasm’ in the hydrocarbon-rich Arab Gulf monarchies as an adaptive capacity of strengthening authoritarian rule. It shows that the political key players have integrated climate policy in close accordance to different sources of legitimation such as building imitative good governance structures, strengthening identity formation or sustaining the provision of welfare gains in order to secure a maximum degree of regime stability.
