Abstract

The serial connection of transmission channels is examined. The main focus lies on the comparison of the achievable capacities resp. data rates, using one channel code for both channels on one hand, and using separate channel codes for each channel on the other hand. First some principal properties are shown on memoryless channel models. Afterward the innuence of memory is examined on the example of serially connected Gilbert-Elliott channels. To proof the practical relevance of this result, a closer look is taken on the example application scenario of video streaming to mobile clients. A suitable and manageable channel model for this wired-wireless combination is introduced, which allows to estimate the maximal relative capacity gain by separate channel coding. It is shown to be approximately equal to the error probability of the wired channel. For verification a simple video transmission system is used, Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) measurements of a layer based video stream, corrupted by a serial connection of two block oriented channels, are confirming the expected gains in data rate.
