Abstract

The present study evaluated the development of literacy competencies, especially reading and spelling strategies and the development of metalinguistic awareness during the first grade. The study focusses on the question how different methods of elementary literacy instruction influence the development of literacy competencies. The sample included 135 pupils from 15 classes, matched on the basis of their phonological awareness in three levels at beginning the school. Three instruction groups were compared: treatment 1 worked with the primer and a training programme for phonological awareness. Treatment 2 learnt with a German type of “language experience approach” (called “developmentally oriented literacy teaching”). Treatment 3 served as control group, learning with primer. The analysis of the developmental dynamic of reading strategies revealed no significant difference, also the differences between the subgroups of phonological awareness levels did not get significant. The analysis of the developmental dynamic of spelling strategies, however, were during the first three months significant different between the three instructional groups and the subgroup of the children of the children at risk (pupils with low phonological awareness). The pupils of the “language experience” classes achieved at any one time the best results. In view of the development of metalinguistic awareness there were great advantages shown for treatment 1 and treatment 2. In comparison the students of these both groups could answer much more different, clearly and abstract while students of treatment 3, which were often confused or without any answer.
