Abstract

In this article, we present first results of systematic numerical investigations for geometrically exact Cosserat rods made of linear viscous Kelvin-Voigt material. Both purely viscous (excluding inertia forces and momenta) and fully dynamic scenarios (including inertia forces and momenta) are investigated. From modal analysis in the linear regime, estimates for critical damping viscosities, which separate purely viscous from dynamic behaviour, are derived. Numerical simulations confirm the validity for these estimates.
