Abstract

In an automated assembly process, the exchangeability of the components is a necessity. This could imply harsh requirements concerning the geometric definition and tolerancing of components. The classification of components is one way to decrease these requirements. Classification used to be limited to manual assembly and small-scale production. Advances in online measuring technology make the classification of components also applicable for mass fabrication. Employing classification, accuracy and process capability of the production could be increased. Besides these positive effects, classification also poses some challenges for the variation simulation. This contribution addresses approaches on how to tackle these challenges and which effects can arise from classification.
