This article aims at outlining a way of combining the valency approach with Adele Goldberg's theory of generalised argument structure constructions. It is argued that item-specific low-level valency constructions must form part of a speaker's knowledge of their language in order to account for restrictions of the explain someone the problem-type. On the other hand, the assumption of a generalized level of argument structure constructions make sense with respect to creative language use (such as sneezing foam off the cappuccino).
It is therefore suggested that Goldberg's Semantic Coherence Principle and Correspondence Principle should be supplemented by a Valency Realisation Principle.
